Fighting the Pandemic Without Borders

[Huaxia Chinese School at Bergen, March 24, 2020] With the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in North America, the number of confirmed cases has surged and Bergen County alone possesses the highest number of confirmed cases in the state of New Jersey. Such a surge has left hospitals in shortage of protective supplies. The lack of protective equipment puts healthcare professionals at greater risk of being infected. On March 19th, Huaxia Chinese School at Bergen (HXBG) launched an initiative to purchase and donate protective supplies to surrounding hospitals. By 10 am March 23rd, the school received $30,957 from Huaxia Bergen teachers, parents, and alumni, Chinese restaurant/grocery owners, and other Chinese groups. Concurrently, the school administration worked extensively to secure supplies from manufacturers and maintain a direct line of communication with hospitals. Within 36 hours of the notice, 3,000 KN95 masks were packaged and labeled with special thank you notes, then shipped by air to Valley Hospital. More masks will be shipped this week to other Bergen County hospitals: Hackensack Medical Center, Holy Name Medical Center, Englewood Hospital, and Bergen New Bridge Medical Center. The total donated masks is 13,200.
Pandemic is ruthless, but compassion has no boundaries. The initiative taken by HXBG has inspired many other Huaxia School branches to do the same. In addition to masks we also plan to purchase protective gowns and goggles in the second phase of our donation. We call on all our friends and families to continue to contribute and show your support. Love can give light in darkness and hope in despair. Together we can fight this pandemic, and ultimately defeat it.
