Feng Yun Weiqi (Go) Class
Huaxia Chinese School at Bergen
Spring Semester Registration
January 25 - June 21, 2009

A Chinese language description of this class is also available.

Weiqi, commonly called "go" in the United States, is an ancient board game which is widely recognized as the most challenging two person strategy game ever invented, and a high point of Chinese culture.

Beginners are welcome to join this class anytime, starting on smaller 9x9 boards, and then moving up to play the regulation 19x19 game with the other students. Each class includes students with a range of playing strengths. Students will be grouped with other students of similar age and experience, and receive instruction suited to their individual strengths and weaknesses.

The class focuses on recognizing and applying common patterns of play and punishing the mistakes of opponents. Later in life, many players find that making progress is hard because they lack these fundamentals, so addressing these early is very important. Key objectives of the class are to enable students to compete successfully in their age group, and to develop good study habits and proper behavior.

Classes are taught using a combination of English and Mandarin Chinese.

The principal instructor, Feng Yun 9p, (website: www.fygc.com) is a professional go player who was a member of the China National Weiqi Team for 18 years, won the China National Women's Individual Championship (1983) and Women's World Championship (1995) among other victories, and is well known in China for her televised game commentaries. Only two other women in the world have ever achieved the rank of professional 9 dan, which is the highest rank in professional go. After coming to the United States with her family, she started the Feng Yun Go School in 2002, and has been teaching players of all strengths, from beginners to some of the strongest amateur players in the world.
